There is nothing more annoying than having your garage door jammed and, on top of that, having a hard time troubleshooting what the problem is. Let’s take a look at a number of the most common reasons for this dilemma and see if we can help you out!
An Obstruction in the Track
An easy place to start is to check your track. Do you have a broom, shovel, or any other item that may have slid or fallen in the path of the track? It is amazing how easily and often this can happen.
Whenever you detect an obstruction in the track simply remove it and try to open your garage door again. If that doesn’t do the trick, move on to the next tip on our list.
Check Your Electric Eyes
Here is the simplest thing to check next. Take a look at both sides of your garage door near the bottom where the electric eyes are that detect when something is in the way and it will prevent your door from closing. This is a safety feature that is designed to put your door in reverse mode.
The electric eyes send an infrared beam across the bottom of your door opening and if a child, pet, toy, or even part of your car is blocking it, your door will reverse and go back upward.
Check Your Electric Eyes Again
There is something else to take a peek at with your electric eyes. Sometimes a broom, shovel, or another item can get pushed up against one of your electric eyes and they are no longer aligned to send the infrared beam across to the other side.
Sometimes when we are in the garage and moving things around, we accidentally push the electric eye and do not realize that we did it, until the garage door won’t shut! Take a look at your eyes and make sure they are set in the same position so that their infrared beam can be set across your door opening.
Move on to the Springs
At times the springs are the source of your headache. The springs facilitate the turning of the metal wheels that help lift the door. If there is a wide spacing in between the coils, they very well may be broken. This is a project for a garage door professional to repair. If you attempt the repairs yourself, you could end up with more trouble than you bargained for.
Working on garage springs is tricky and potentially dangerous, do the smart thing and call a professional garage door repair service like Team Taylor Garage Door Repair, don’t risk it!
The Cable Pulley Could be the Culprit
Several parts could be causing your door to be jammed, but the next one to look at is the cable pulley. If the cable pulley on an extension spring door gets worn down, this can prevent your door from working properly. This is one of the more difficult “do it yourself” projects.
When there’s a problem with the cable pulley, the DIY approach doesn’t pay, you could end up making the problem worse and subsequently more expensive to fix.
